A floor plan shows how rooms and hallways connect, where people can enter and exit, and where emergency equipment is located. It gives staff a common reference when orienting new employees, planning an event, or showing first responders how to reach a particular area.



Evacuation maps are necessary because people often know only the way they came in. If that route is blocked, even someone who uses the building every day may be unsure how else to get out. A map posted where people can review it in advance shows their current location, a primary and alternate route to an exit, and the designated assembly area outside. Staff and volunteers can use it during a drill to walk both routes and become familiar with doors they seldom use. Your insurance company may also require evacuation maps for your facility.
